Buying Guide – How to Choose the Best External PS5 Storage Options
Choosing the right external storage for your PS5 requires balancing speed, capacity, and compatibility. Here are the key factors to consider.
Storage Capacity Needs
Determine how many games you typically want to keep installed or archived. Larger drives like 4TB or 8TB are best for those with extensive libraries who do not want to delete games often.
Choose capacity based on how many titles you want accessible at once without transferring back and forth.
Speed vs. Storage Type
SSDs offer faster load times and quicker file transfers compared to HDDs which are better for archiving less frequently played titles. Consider if you need direct play capabilities or just backup storage.
Pick SSDs for speed and HDDs for large capacity at a lower price point.
Official Licensing
Officially licensed drives guarantee compatibility with PS5 system software and reduce risk of errors or corruption. They often include firmware optimized for console use.
Always prefer licensed drives to ensure seamless integration with your console.
Portability and Design
If you travel frequently or want to move your library between consoles look for lightweight drives with protective features. Some models include shock resistance or water resistance for durability.
Select a durable portable design if you plan to take your drive on the go.
Connection Interface
Ensure the drive supports USB 3.0 or higher for adequate speed. Some drives also include USB-C options which offer greater flexibility across devices and modern consoles.
Check your console ports and choose a drive with compatible connectors for best results.
Warranty and Support
A longer warranty period like two or five years indicates manufacturer confidence in product longevity. Data recovery services can also be valuable additions for important files.
Prioritize drives with solid warranty terms to protect your investment.
Budget Considerations
Prices vary significantly between affordable 500GB options and massive 8TB enterprise drives. Balance cost with capacity and speed to find the best value for your needs.
Set a budget that fits your capacity requirements without overspending on unused features.
Aesthetic Matching
Many drives come in black or white to match console designs. If aesthetics matter for your setup consider models that complement your console look.
Choose a color that fits your gaming space style preferences.
How to Use and Care for Your External PS5 Storage Options
Connect your drive to the USB port on the rear of the PS5 console to ensure stable power and data transfer. For internal M.2 SSDs follow the console instructions to open the cover and secure the drive with the screw.
Manage your games through the console storage settings to transfer titles between internal storage and the external drive. Always transfer PS5 games to internal storage before playing them to ensure optimal performance.
Keep the drive clean and away from heat sources to maintain longevity. Avoid moving the drive while it is active to prevent data corruption or physical damage to the internal components.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I play PS5 games directly from an external drive?
You cannot play PS5 games directly from an external HDD. You must transfer them to the internal SSD before playing. However you can store PS4 games and play them directly from the external drive.
What is the difference between PS5 and PS4 storage?
PS5 games require the internal SSD for play due to speed requirements. External drives are used to store PS5 games and play PS4 games directly. Internal M.2 SSDs allow direct play of PS5 titles.
How do I transfer games to an external drive?
Navigate to Settings > Storage > Console Storage on your PS5. Select Games and Programs and choose Move to Extended Storage to transfer selected titles to your external drive.
Do all external drives work with PS5?
Not all drives work optimally. It is recommended to use officially licensed drives or those with USB 3.0 or higher. Avoid older USB 2.0 drives as they will be too slow for effective use.
Is an internal M.2 SSD better than external?
Internal M.2 SSDs allow direct play of PS5 games without transferring data. External drives are mainly for archiving and playing PS4 games. Choose based on whether you need direct play or storage.
How many games can a 4TB drive hold?
A 4TB drive can store roughly 100 to 150 average-sized games. This number varies depending on game file sizes and whether you include DLC or updates alongside the base game files.
